Amount of Grants to Minnesota Nonprofits:

Pretty straightforward application. Helps if you have a connection to trustees. They will do a site visit if they are considering funding your application.
Doesn't "get" nonprofits and issues, Difficult to work with, Culturally incompetent
Applied and not funded
They will reach out to you if they are interested.
Hire program staff or designate new trustees who are steeped in the nonprofit world. The trustees are wealthy heirs and absolutely don’t understand.
Most uncomfortable site visit in my career. One of the trustees came to our youth-serving center and was visibly afraid of the youth. The trustee very obviously shrank away from one of the youths we selected to talk about the program (and we had to process with the upset youth later). The funder also argued with us over our program model and used pretty offensive terms to describe the young adults.
They give away money!

They seem to like to visit, and to get a sense of the leadership of the program. Depending on who visits, they may want to see the programs in action, or to just talk about strategy and numbers. They also like to consider making "challenge grants," so be open to negotiating a different kind of grantmaking relationship.

Funded for lesser amount
They seem to be pretty accessible (i.e. they quickly return calls and emails). However, they're not totally open to having frank conversations about the reality of nonprofit issues, I don't think.
It would be great if they would consider making multi-year grants. They seem interested in longer-than-one-year funding relationships, but the way their grants are structured currently, there is not a way to secure funding for more than one year.
They make large grants ($50,000 range), which make a big different to youth programs. Even though they may say they don't want to fund a project for multiple years, they are open to it, and have funded us for 2 years in a row now. That is a very positive thing.
