Professional in the field
Skip their trainings. They tend to recycle the same speakers every year and they don't go into a whole lot of depth or present cutting-edge topics.

Bad
Unwilling to welcome new voices, particularly people in the urban area they serve.
Bad
Their funding favors the wealthy, suburban nonprofits but not where the needs are greatest (in the city of Waterbury). They talk about diversity, equity, and inclusion, but don't tend to authentically "walk the walk." Staff and board are not sufficiently diverse or welcoming to diverse voices. "Leadership programs" are neither, particularly for people living and working in Waterbury. For too long, they have put excessive dollars into a Western CT "leadership" program that is basically a social club for wealthy donors. Very disappointing to see.
Power structures within upper management and board need to change for this funder to move beyond its exclusive, "clubby" nature.

It’s not the kind of place you can just walk into without a meeting.
Bad
I don’t understand their goals. They seem to fund most projects as long as the grantee can use the right language that enables their project to fall into any of the foundations “priority areas.”
Please stop proclaiming to invest in the black and brown community, and DEI work, when your staff is predominately white along with your board. Systemic racism needs racism to start within.
This funder is not invested in dismantling systemic racism even though they like to demonstrate all the money they have invested in DEI work. The community right outside their doors are still impoverished, poor and there is no true action happening by this foundation to change that. Their board and staff are primarily white and most do not live in the community outside their doors.
Ask a lot of questions and for lots of documentation, for the grantee to be awarded very little money, in return.

CCF has been so helpful to my organization. I highly recommend getting involved in the networking and professional development opportunities they offer even before you are ready to apply for funding as this is a great way to get to know the program officers who tend to make themselves available and seem interested in learning about your organization.
