EJAF is a tempting prospect because they have so much money and have recently put out calls to increase their funding for POC folks and the trans community. However, the application process is frustrating for two main reasons; there is no way to get help if you need it and their character limits are impossible. For example, 3000 characters (including spaces!) to give all your goals and activities related to the request. I found it difficult to tell the funder much about us.

In addition to the character limit, it was near impossible to get in touch with anyone at EJAF. For example, they did not tell us that we did not receive the funding. Instead they just posted a new call. There were emails provided to get in contact, but those emails were dead accounts. I ended up going to the main EJAF site and emailing everyone I could find, which eventually, months after we were supposed to get an answer from them, someone sent me a form rejection letter.

Looking through the list of organizations they have funded, I think that they are doing good work. I also greatly appreciated that their call specified that applicant organizations needed be led by and based in the communities being served.
Do not provide fake or dead email addresses to grantees. Also do not reject grantees by posting a new call, instead of sending rejection letters. That part of the experience felt like a bad date.
I genuinely think that EJAF is doing good work, I was just really disappointed in the application process.
Their calls and all communications are very clear about expectations. I also loved that their call asked that organizations be led by and based in the communities being served.
