Grant Applicant - applied in 2020

Although they are the largest funder in Lake County, IN, they are notoriously stingy with their funds. The grant awards are small especially relative to the very large number of questions you have to answer to apply. They do not appear to understand nonprofits as they are always only willing to fund something "new" which is not sustainable, or even a good practice, and then saying that it has to be sustainable, after a small investment. This funder has too much power relative to the resources they provide the community and they are only focused on racial diversity right now severely limiting funding for lots of orgs.

Cons

Likes site visits, Doesn't "get" nonprofits and issues, Difficult to work with, Bureaucratic, Risk averse

Reviewer 224 - Grant Applicant - applied in 2017

We did meet with the staff and attended a workshop on how to apply for a grant. The person we met with sounded very positive about our organization and the odds of us receiving a grant looked favorable. Both times we applied, we were told our outreach was not large enough and was too specialized to receive a grant- we should reach out to smaller foundations. When seeing the rewarded grant lists, it became apparent that other small and specialized nonprofits were considered worthy to receive funding for their bereavement services that were not as far reaching as ours.

Cons

Inadvertently exerts negative influence in the field, Bureaucratic
