Although we had a very positive partnership for seven years, they have changed their funding guidelines. Although our request was for Program Funding, they are only willing to fund "equipment" or stuff, they will not fund salaries, rent. They would prefer to pick a line item on a Program Budget and only fund certain items.

They do not ask any questions about outcomes or outputs, nor do they seem interested in our mission. They are very focused on volunteer opportunities for their staff, especially in manufacturing. They also prefer all volunteering to be done onsite.
Learn more about nonprofit accounting. Our work is done by people and by not allowing any funds to go to salaries you are not supporting growth in our organization.
The Community Relationships role seems to change every 2 years or so. Decisions are not made locally, the Foundation in Indiana has the final say on funding.
After many months of negotiation, we still don't know whether they will fund us.
They do involve their employees in the fundraising application and the employees that we have worked are diligent in following up.

Even though it states on their 990 that they accept unsolicited requests, I received the following response to a submitted request: "The Cummins Foundation funds projects in which our employees are significantly engaged and that fall within our priority areas of Education, Equality of Opportunity and Environment. We do not consider unsolicited grant requests. Instead, grant requests are submitted to the Foundation by our employee teams to support their work."

I reached out to them before applying but never heard back. Hence, I went ahead and submitted a proposal per the instructions in their 990 and on their website.
Please be more transparent about your process.
Make sure you have a meaningful connection with a Cummins employee before you pursue funding.
