The grant writing portal is simple and straightforward to use. When I had a question, their Senior Community Impact Associate got right back to me and was friendly and encouraging. This was my first experience in grant writing and she made it a positive one.

Pros

Friendly, "Gets" nonprofits and issues, Responsive

Volunteering for a WI public school in need of technology for students during the initial phase of COVID, I was asked to make contact with the program officer. I first sent an introductory email, then made a call based on the response. The officer was very obliging and interested. When I got back to the school, it turned out that they had received an unexpectedly large gift that took all they had to figure out how to spend it. I regretted informing the funder since I looked forward to working with them.

Rigid online format requirements can be difficult to comply with. With the small grants, the time required to gather, organize and input figures, both for grant requests and grant reports is excessive.

Pros

Positive leader in the field, Responsive

Be prepared to be frustrated by their online portal's functionality. Also consider the amount of writing and reporting versus the amount of the ask before applying.

Cons

Bureaucratic, Risk averse

I've applied to several of DSACF funds in the past two years, while representing two different non-profits, and have always received at least 75% of the funding I've asked for. I would advise reaching out to their Director of Community Philanthropy and nurturing relationships with their other staff, as well.

Pros

Friendly, Responsive

If you have any remaining grant funds on your project budget - even if you show other sources of revenue - they will request the surplus of funds to be returned to them. Make sure you depict your program budget as breaking even!

Cons

Doesn't "get" nonprofits and issues
