PACF's application is over the top in terms of the level of detail they are looking for (that must be crammed in to a character-limited space). Rather than leading the way in using a nonprofit-friendly grant application, you have to reinvent the wheel. They claim to be a resource for nonprofits, but it feels like they serve their Board more than the nonprofits they claim to want to partner with.
They revisioned their funding priorities and we thought they would revision their grant process as well. Sadly, it is more cumbersome than ever.

It took months to get an appointment with the VP-Grants and Programs following PACF's rejection of our proposal. She was relatively new to the organization at the time so a brief delay was understandable. But, having to chase her was a waste of my time.
The President & CEO has been quite responsive and is a visible member of the community.

Because they have recently readjusted their strategic priorities, and the funding cycle is not yet complete, it's yet to be seen if they are meeting their new philanthropic goals.
I'm hopeful that they will reinstitute their educational programming for nonprofits, including the "Path to Impact" program which brought together a cohort of nonprofit professionals for professional development and mentorship.
Dial it back! The grant application PACF currently uses is cumbersome and time-consuming for nonprofits to complete, and frankly, I would imagine it is for the Board members who review the applications. The NY/NJ Common Application exists for a reason and as a leader in the philanthropic community, PACF should use this tool as the basis for their grantmaking. Once they have selected nonprofits to move forward in the process, then other more detailed questions could be asked before final grant decisions are made.
I think nonprofits feel like they are being served, even if they are not grant recipients, if the foundation offers other services for them. PACF has been a leader in this area and it has been a great way to meet other nonprofits while learning important and necessary skills. I look forward to seeing more programs in the future.
