They restrict their funding to just the Austin area and Maryland, with one Executive Director representing each funding area. Very responsive to questions during the funding process. They are one of the few foundations I have worked with that told us a specific amount to apply for based on their giving budget that year. I appreciated the transparency, even though it was less than what we were looking for.

Good
The Executive Directors are very approachable via email. I don't believe they work for the Foundation full time, so I would advise email over the phone to get a quick response.
Good
Their goals are very broad, supporting education programs for at-risk youth. They are very open to nonprofits spending grant funds as needed, as long as it stays in the program.
I would shorten their grant application process slightly. They use the Maryland Common Grant form for an LOI and full proposal, but the LOI is fairly long compared to others. The forms have a lot of redundant questions between the two, with the full proposal only increasing in length/depth, so it could be helpful to have a shorter LOI and allow for more work to go into the full proposal. Also, consider a modified process for current grantees (like being able to skip to the full proposal directly if applying for renewed funding).
