I pitched the idea for our project via phone (had previous relationship through networking events they sponsor), and had face-to-face meeting with staff. Staff then formally invited us to submit the full proposal. Very short deadline to submit the full proposal, but not difficult to write. Quick response from foundation with funding decision.
