It's a good idea to set up a meeting with a program officer beforehand, as their funding focus can be pretty specific. Once you have a relationship with program officers, though, I have found them to be helpful in figuring out whether your project or organization might fit in other funding opportunities.

They have been re-evaluating their focus in recent years, and we are hopeful that they will broaden their definitions of how to address some of their focus areas. For example, their food systems work hasn't traditionally funded programs for agricultural workers, but they have been willing to fund specific initiatives related to agricultural workers in the last two years.
I love the intentional thinking the foundation has been doing the last few years and the expanded accessibility and creative thinking about what might fit in the areas they want to solve...keep it up!
This year, they accepted a grant application that we wrote for another funder, without any alterations!

It was helpful to have a colleague with existing relationship with the program officer who was willing to introduce us and our project. After that, we got honest and helpful feedback about our proposal prior to submitting our application.

They are very specific about what they fund with each RFA. Don't bother trying to shoehorn your project into something where it doesn't fit. That said, if your org and program are a match, they are very willing to work with you. Once funded, expect a tidy webinar about 'how to work with these funds' and the reporting expectations -- which are completely reasonable and not scary at all. They like to do a check up front - which is my preferred method! Then you just report how it went.
The most admirable part of this org is that the grant managers are PRESENT in the fields and communities that they fund. They talk, they listen, they care whether or not you are successful. And they are truly just as interested if you fail -- did you need more money? more time? more support? They are constantly trying to improve.
