The grant manager is really smart and asks substantive follow up questions. I often find online portals difficult to navigate and theirs was no different. The renewal process mixed with the new application felt confusing and repetitive, but also totally fine. Top-notch organization that seems educated and involved in the issues they fund.

Pros

Positive leader in the field, Culturally sensitive, Insightful, Friendly, Builds relationships, "Gets" nonprofits and issues, Openminded, Responsive

I am not familiar with the process of approaching FNV directly, but rather they participate in a funders' collective that reviews subject-matter related proposals along with other foundations and they make strategic decisions as a group. However, I suspect that they would be very responsive and candid with anyone who wanted to reach out to them about their process, capacity, and interests. I would recommend email contact and being clear and detailed in your message.

Pros

Risk taker, Insightful, Friendly, Responsive

We have a demonstrated history of hard won, yet successful work and have developed a really positive working relationship with them. I think a personal conversations of work being done seems to be highly valued by their staff.

This funder values grassroots work, as well as transparency and honesty. They'd rather know the truth about your challenges than see a shiny dog and pony show. They also give budgets a close read, so make sure you're able to answer detailed questions about what you need, what you have, and how resources are being spent.
