I would definitely suggest finding ways to interact with the group and getting to know key members a bit before applying. Request a meeting or phone conversation, or attend an event they are sponsoring. Its just like any other process in life, familiarity an putting yourself in someone else's shoes goes a long way towards success. The long-term approach will give greater confidence in putting in the time and energy to tackle the application, and that generally builds in a different way than just sitting down and saying "You funder, me organization."

Pros

Positive leader in the field, Gives more than money, Risk taker, Culturally sensitive, Insightful, Friendly, Builds relationships, Likes site visits, "Gets" nonprofits and issues, Openminded, Responsive
