Before approaching Piper, be sure to have your LOI completed. Have a budget, measurable outcomes, etc. If not, the pre-LOI meeting with a program officer will not go well. Piper expects organization's to have a program; not an idea

Positive leader in the field, Risk taker, Culturally sensitive, Friendly, Builds relationships, "Gets" nonprofits and issues, Openminded, Responsive

This funder is very transparent both on its website and if you call on a program officer. They are open to discussing projects and sharing whether or not those projects might resonate with the board. The staff is friendly, but a bit buttoned-up and conservative.

The main downside to working with Piper is that their application process is long and complicated. Once you receive agreement on a concept, you are required to submit an LOI (and at last check that was still a manual process done by sending in a Microsoft Word document). If your LOI is approved you then go through a rigorous online application process and even if you are a large well known nonprofit you are required to provide detailed budgets and financial forms. I was confused by their overall process -- I thought the full application was the last step but I ended up having to revise and submit a second draft. The process was not well spelled out or communicated.

Pros

Positive leader in the field, Friendly, Responsive

Piper is very clear about the required steps for their grants process (e.g. meet with Program Manager first, they will vet internally, invite those who are a good fit to submit LOI, and so on). However, they are not clear about how demanding they are during the application process. Of course, their LOI and grant application only allow certain space for specific info requested. But if the Piper Program Manager contacts you for more detail during the LOI process (either for info included on the LOI but for which there was limited space, or for info not asked about in the LOI) you'd better be prepared to answer within 24 hours. Same goes for the grant application stage. Whereas most funders follow their stated process, Piper is much more dynamic. On one hand it's great that they are so thorough, but on the other hand, it's difficult to feel like you're at their beck and call when you are juggling many other projects.

Pros

Positive leader in the field, Gives more than money, Friendly, Responsive
