Schism between young, woke staff and board. Getting over the first hump puts your application in peril with the second.

Pros

Positive leader in the field

They got our mission and values, and it was a good match for theirs (which are posted in detail on their website). If it's not a match for your organization, don't force it as they really delve into this.

Pros

Risk taker, Friendly, Builds relationships, Likes site visits, "Gets" nonprofits and issues, Openminded

I want to love Satterberg Foundation. However, I've tried multiple times over the last 2 years, on behalf of client organizations who have been funded and those seeking funding, to create a relationship with a particular program officer - AND SHE JUST WILL NOT EVER EMAIL OR CALL ME BACK. Never.

The staff at Satterberg are very responsive and helpful, and they really want organizations to succeed. They ask great questions, and are open to hearing from you as the expert in your field. Show them the impact of what you do, and they'll be excited to see it!

They say they are looking for alignment with their mission, but they clearly have other priorities that they consider over mission-alignment that they do not discuss publicly.

Cons

Inadvertently exerts negative influence in the field

I would highly recommend applying to this foundation for capacity building. I really appreciate their approach and clear value of being of service to nonprofits. Even though we were not selected to submit a full proposal, I feel very good about our decision to send in an LOI.

Pros

Positive leader in the field, "Gets" nonprofits and issues

Be as obvious with your the racial diversity of your staff, board, and program participants as possible. Really obvious. Bring the darkest shaded board member. Our board member and her child identify as native american and we were told later by Satterberg board members they were too white.

Cons

Culturally incompetent

They are a group of individuals, mostly in their 50's and 60's, who are dedicated mostly to social justice and environmental issues. They are progressive and like progressive proposals, so don't be conservative with them.

Pros

Flexible guidelines, Reasonable reporting terms, Risk taker
