The application is very cumbersome -- make sure to allow time to review all the questions multiple times (including pop-up questions), and especially data-related questions where the funder's categories may not match up with the data you have on hand. Also, be prepared for requests on short notice from foundation staff-- in my experience, this ranged from requesting our attendance at donor events, to requests for info (i.e. cumulative data/testimonials about our programs) that could have been gleaned from the existing information we've submitted to the foundation. Contact with the foundation staff was difficult, as it seemed like there were always one or two people wearing a lot of hats. That said, they're a dedicated funder and good about renewal grants.

While the funder puts forth a somewhat accessible and open process, it is helpful to have vintners from the grants review committee on your 'side' to get things moving.
Bad
The change in priorities and processes requires the nonprofit community to continually shift and change their focus. The consultants they hire to 'evaluate their investments' count apples and oranges as the same deliverable, muddying the waters of any progress that might be made in the areas of health or education. This is a marketing/membership organization, not a philanthropic organization. They would do better with their goals if they had a consistent program officer that had authority and expertise to make decisions in alignment with the stated funding priorities.
This funding will be significantly reduced in the future.
Give out funds and share with the community how much money their distribute.

We are grateful to have had Napa Valley Vintners as a consistent funder for the past few years. Susan Duke has been our primary point of contact and is wonderful to work with and incredibly responsive. On the whole, Napa Valley Vintners is very thoughtful and detailed and requires specific outputs and outcomes for funding proposals, along with meticulous evaluation methods. The proposals and reports are very time-consuming, but they have remained one of our strongest funder relationships. Currently, they are revamping their strategic framework to shift from solely being a 'funder' to a comprehensive investor. They are working with existing grantees to ask for feedback in a really inclusive way.
