The Ford Family Foundation has been going through some changes for the last few years. They're experimenting with becoming more involved in communities in some ways, and less in others. The best thing you can do is call them and invite them to come visit you. Call the leader of the department you want funding from.

Give more capacity building grants. More types of organizations, more range of funding.
Call them. Invite them. Get involved in their odd little efforts, like Learning Exchanges.
Scholarships! Amazing full 4 year scholarships. They also do a great job of getting to know their grantees.

TFFF is great to work with; they are committed to investing in rural Oregon communities (and Siskiyou County, CA). Program officers with whom we have worked seem to really understand the difficulties facing rural communities. Be sure, however, that your needs and request align strongly with Ford's priority areas or initiatives, as they are keenly focused.

I have found several program officers and staff to be very accessible. They are quick to return a call or an email, even if only to say, "I'm out of the office, but let's schedule a time for a visit."

I believe from my involvement in various events TFFF has held of which I've participated, that they are accomplishing their goals. I also believe they are quick to "adjust their sails," if they feel something isn't right. I know many there to be responsive to changes that affect rural communities.
Grant writing is so very time consuming. If we have come to you -- and been awarded grants -- several times in the past, might there be an easier process (think Disneyland FAST PASS) for an applicant?
They don't like to be considered a faucet that dispenses dollars. They have more to offer and like to be asked for help in other ways as well. (And, the Ford website is very user friendly - always a plus!)
They listen. An applicant can call and say, "I have these needs and each seems to fit well with Ford's priorities. Do you have any insights?" They are quick to say, "Great question; I don't believe our board will support your XYZ need at this time because ..., but I think you're proposal for ABC, especially if combined with your other need in this way, and in a two-year gift to help ensure sustainability ..." They want to see rural organizations succeed!
