The foundation doesn't take unsolicited proposals because they make large long-term investments in their existing grantees, which makes it hard to get in the door but also means they'll support your organization substantially. That said, they invite inquiries and provide contact info on their website. Take them up on that offer and they will communicate with you.

The staff at the Walter and Evelyn Haas, Jr. Fund genuinely want to help with the application process. That said, it can take quite a while and sometimes needs repeated requests to get answers to questions.

The foundation is excellent at implementing its stated mission on its website: "The Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund works to advance equality and justice so every person can thrive and live life with dignity and hope." They speak up about incidents and policies of injustice, and put their money into groups doing real work for social justice. They are well-respected in the nonprofit community, exemplified with a lifetime achievement award from the regional nonprofit professional association for their retiring executive director.
It can take a long time to get from the discussion phase of a project to receiving an award. The foundation's current application form was created in 2022 and unfortunately it's very time-consuming. For an organization that is committed to equity and accessibility, that isn't reflected in their form. They don't always understand the time that is required to provide the requested information.
It takes time to build a relationship with them if they don't already know you. Be patient in developing a connection with them.
The foundation was created and is still overseen by members of the Haas, Jr. family who are on the board. They instill a culture of generosity in each generation to ensure their good work will continue. The foundation has a model that invites community input and they're responsive to what they hear. They like to collaborate as thought partners and not just financial supporters, and their guidance is helpful.

It may take a few calls or emails to get a response. I've found patience is worth it as the funder comes through with a positive response. I've been unable to secure an in person meeting. Most communication is via email.
