It also feels like the community foundation wants to do their own programming and raise money away from nonprofits doing the work on the ground at times. They feel like they are on the top of the nonprofit industrial complex foodchain. They received a $100m endowment recently that is unrestricted and only distributed a small amount of funding upfront to 10 nonprofits, while using it to expand their own programming. Does this foundation really need programs?! Can't it just distribute all the funding to the community? It feels like preservation of the enterprise is their main purpose. Also, the fundraising conference was a slap in the face. Why do nonprofits have to pay to be taught how to fundraise when you are keeping the money away from communities for your own enterprise preservation? It makes absolutely no sense.
Move money to community as though your life depends on it. Everyone else is putting their lives on the line for the issues on the ground. Stop worrying about your own jobs and enterprise. You all will find another job.
Community foundations hold significant amount of narrative power. This feels incredibly harmful and is gaslighting to communities in need. Centering wealthy donors never gets us anywhere in society.
Community foundations in general feel very toxic and dominate the nonprofit industrial complex, keeping money away from grassroots groups on the ground. Often, I wonder what happens if these entities didn't exist at all? What would happen? Perhaps in the short term, people will be confused but I would imagine that we would figure out how to organize ourselves to distribute resources directly in community.
