Good
They understand the funding landscape and try to align their giving with current needs. They are into the "big picture" and their grant proposals tend to ask about broad organizational goals, not programmatic minutiae.

Review their funding areas and be sure your application lines up into the appropriate area. Spend time on your total project costs and other contributions as they won't support being the only funder.

We were a successful grant receipient years ago but haven't applied since. Being outside of Portland, there was no easy means to identify, contact or otherwise with staff.
Good
Have outreach sessions, say annually, for past applicants outside of Portland by segment areas, ie arts & culture, social, etc outlining what you are looking for in grant applications, funding, etc. Being small and outside of Portland and with your staff turnover, we haven't applied often as the grants process requires resources so we have to have a large request. So we start over with you each time.
