Greater Worcester Community Foundation is a wonderfully helpful, truly community-based foundation. They are transparent about what they are trying to do, their process, their different funds and the limitations, guidelines. Their web site is relatively easy to find information like deadlines, the various funds. Most of all, their program officers are generous with their support and advice for applying and reporting, they respond quickly and are always helpful and offer insights to the workings of the foundation so applicants can really understand.

Most of the online questions have character limits that are way too strict - 500 characters for "need"? (and many others). I have written dozens of grant proposals and I can honestly say these limits force applicants to spend double the amount of time it should take to do this application. The application took 10 hours, but other applications for the same organization/program took 5 hours.
