Professional in the field
Be clear about your needs and request. If the staff is enthusiastic dont expect anything to pan out until the board votes. And then be careful to rely on their funding until it arrives.

Bad
Unless you know the staff they are very inaccessible.

They have a narrow old-fashioned view of conservation. However they are doing some innovating at the edges that could make a difference. They make large grants to their "favorites".
Shift to a transparent trust-based model of philanthropy - publicize your criteria, your process and be open to all.
I personally have a good relationship and I believe the staff is hard working and cares about their grantees. However the trustees (and perhaps the senior staff) are not fair, honest and open with grantees and potential grantees. This leaves the staff having to back-peddle and make excuses and they cant be transparent with the field.
This funder is not clear with grantees or the public about its funding criteria or decision making process. Staff raises expectations and even make promises to potential grantees and then the board (and/or senior staff) undermine these decisions. In two instances this year they have reversed decisions and in one case wrongly based non-profit staff for their own miscommunication.
Provide large grants. (But given the size of the foundation and pay of their executives (CE0) makes $700,000+ they could do much more)

This foundation is a friend for life. We had our first grant from them in 2017 and have had a positive relationship each year since. Keep in touch with your contact, invite them to your site and involved, even ask them to review your application.
