Not only did the team make themselves available for meetings they were generous in their inputs to help us shape a more robust plan and proposal.

I don't feel informed enough to make a judgment on how well Heron is achieving its impact. I would say, however, that what has impressed us is their pioneering focus on investing 100% of assets for impact and looking at the high points of leverage in the system that can have impact at greater scale.
As a grantee, strategic relationships can be as helpful as funding, so creating more space to look at the network of relationships Heron has access to and how that can advance our mission would be really helpful.
Heron loves numbers and provides rigorous and helpful challenge for your organisation / business model and approach. They have a wide view of what successful impact models look like and offer their inputs generously and without judgment.

As long as you're aligned on the mission and can deliver the goods, Heron is about the easiest foundation to work with. Reporting requirements are meant to support, not detract, from the work. Communication is respectful and responsive.

They have broken down the wall between grants and investments, so are able to be flexible about what kind of capital works to advance the mission.
Heron takes a critical and holistic view of their mission to help people help themselves out of poverty and so is open to new viewpoints, new data and new approaches.

The Heron Foundation is seeking to transform the philanthropic model in the context of entrenched systems in capitalism and community life. The challenges we face are born of 150+ years of capitalism and 1000s of years of human inequities and prejudices. They are courageous enough to ask the bigger questions and ask what the role of philanthropy must be in an emergent future of more human agency, equity, freedom and co-flourishing.
Find your voice (in service to the field) without apologies.

I reached out to the Heron Foundation without an "In" but felt they took the time to properly review my presentation and firm before replying to me. It was a thoughtful and helpful interaction.

My contact at Heron, was thoughtful and diligent in reviewing us but most importantly was very polite. While they passed on us, it was clear that they had done their work reviewing us, and had passed because we were genuinely not a good fit for the foundation's goals and objectives.

Heron is truly a partner to the organizations they fund and have provided us with excellent guidance and advice. Also, at our request, they have put us in touch with other organizations who have been valuable - both other grantees who have faced similar hurdles and consultants who could provide support. Heron also makes it easy to work with them and focus their time and ours on achieving success.

Though their goals have transitioned recently we are an Enterprise Grantee and in our case (and other) Heron truly achieved the transition of our organization from spending substantial time on fundraising each year to building our client business.
Though the current focus is more community based don't forget the role national organizations can play in making local change!
Heron truly knows our organization, our mission, our approach and our people. They read and digest everything we share and we see their caring about our success in everything they do.
Every request is looked at with the most practical lens "will this help you achieve your goal".

Heron is an AMAZING foundation. They build a relationship with you, they think about how to make the non profit enterprise successful vs. just putting money on one program. They trust the Executive Director. And they fund all costs - yes even that dreaded "overhead" which is essential to actually running an organization. They are a true partner. I believe other foundations can learn from Heron's example

Provide a little more clarity about the process including how the size of the grant is determined. That said, they were in a CEO transition during the time we were working on this, and so all things considered it was very smooth.
Generous six figure grant, with part for general operating expenses and part for "enterprise capital" which is used to invest to build future capacity
