They are truly there to help you. Not just in applying for funds but in connecting you with others in the community
Recognize that it may be hard to measure the benefits of connecting others, which is time consuming for you but in the long term benefits so many organizations and young people
They may recognize the importance of what you are doing but the foundation has a specific focus that has evolved over the years. So if you are looking at past 990s, it may not be relevant to 2020 and coming years as to who they funded. Keep looking at their website
They are a prototype for other foundations to look towards. Its more than just dollars they give but also technical assistance (bringing together peer learning groups, making connections so that your program can respond to community needs or grow organizational capacity)
Just being there and conveying they want to be your partner and not a place to turn to when needing money. With their specific funding interest they truly share your mission and want to help live out that mission

The foundation has a specific funding interest so not everyone is a good fit. Look at the website, as well as the resource materials they have developed. But their interests are evolving and building on bringing past investments in youth social enterprises to the next level of impact

They are very supportive and will suggest other places if you are not a good fit. They live their mission.
Good
They are totally rock it in accomplishing philanthropic goals. Not only do they give grants to individual orgs for programs, but also made a significant investment of resources in providing pro bono assistance to a group of youth social enterprises specific to developing evaluation capacity and create a body of knowledge specific to youth social enterprises.
The foundation has a specific funding interest. There isn't much wiggle room.
They see the bigger landscape. They fund programs but they see where overall weaknesses are and do 'systemic work'-e.g. creating a cohort to receive evaluation technical assistance and now trying to figure out how to bring local employers and youth social enterprises together.

Sundance’s role as an advocacy organization does create some uncertainty for us as grantees, if only because we are unclear about the role we can play in this work. If we have one specific point of feedback, it would be that we encourage Sundance to explore further opportunities for grantees to support their important systems-change initiatives.
We have greatly appreciated our ongoing partnership with the Sundance Foundation. Their team is easy to work with, and we have benefitted greatly from the expertise and stability they bring to the youth social entrepreneurship sector.

Awesome by phone or email!
Good
They have gone beyond simply giving dollars directly. They saw a systemic gap specific to evaluation in a field/sector and corrected it by providing access to technical assistance on a pro bono basis to a cohort of npos. Then did the same thing for relationship building with local businesses.
Read the website. The foundation is clear in how specific is their funding interest
