It's best to have a discussion before proposal development.

They claim to provide funding to support higher education and are open to project ideas for submission, but do not seem to provide any awards in this area.
Increase funding transparency and do not encourage applications for projects that will never be funded.
Very approachable and friendly.

The process is clear and easy to understand. Feedback is excellent. We have been frustrated by receiving excellent comments, suggestions and encouragement -- only to not get the funding. My advice would be to not assume the encouragement and positive feedback will result in funding.

I've read comments saying it was hard to contact the funder. This has not been my experience.
Just be prepared to hear that your application had no weaknesses, that the need you described is real, etc. and still don't get funding. This is very competitive.
Communication and feedback on strengths and weaknesses of the proposal.

In Telligen's RFP, they strongly encourage you to contact their staff to discuss your application. My team has tried to do this through both email and phone and never get a response. They seem to pride themselves on communication, but, in our experience, they're not communicative at all.

Please communicate with applicants who are trying to follow the guidelines set out in the RFP.
They're very clear in their RFP on what their priorities are.

There is a lot of competition for Telligen grants. You have to decide for your organization if it is worth investing the time into the application process when your chances of success may be less than 25%.

The Telligen staff are responsive, professional and polite. I emailed a question before submitting the letter of inquiry and received a timely and helpful response.

They seem to be strategic and thoughtful about how they invest their finances into projects. But I am not well positioned to judge their success. They work in four states so the impact is spread over many geographic locations.

Professional in the field
Take advantage of Telligen's offer to talk through your proposal and what they are looking for in applicants. Very responsive, great communication, highly competitive process.

Invites conversation, provides detailed instructions, gives followup comments and statistics for the field of applicants. The most accessible funder I have ever worked with.
Good
Yes, the group has a clear process -- no guessing required -- which ensures the applications that come in for review are in great alignment with their goals. They also are willing to support innovative approaches which don't have as much data behind them but offer promising solutions.
Find ways to share your philanthropic process with other funders. The transparency of your process is refreshing and could provide good information for other grantors.
This is a highly competitive field. Telligen offers a relatively short LOI process which helps applicants avoid a significant investment of time if they aren't likely to get strong consideration.
Communication. From the RFP through the award, they tell you exactly where you are in the process, what to expect next and when.

Everything in the RFP encourages you to reach out to the Program Officer prior to applying. Despite multiple emails and phone calls, we never heard back from the Program Officer. After we weren't funded, we again reached out, in hopes of getting some feedback (as the RFP encouraged) and never received a response.
