This is a second review for the grant received in 2018 (previous review for 2015 grant). During the 2018 grant cycle, the Wells Fargo Foundation had already decided what grant and project they wanted to donate before making the grant, and they were not very available or flexible to discuss the broader scope of needs that could have been addressed with the grant funds. Again, having a dialogue as early in the process as possible would have led to a smoother and better-coordinated process.

As in the 2015 grant cycle, the Wells Fargo Foundation has specific focus areas, and they do remain fully committed to these areas, such as early grade literacy.
Being as up-front and direct as possible about any changes in the current year's grant cycle can help avoid misunderstanding, confusion, and any disappointment. Grantees understand that funding conditions and priorities may change from year to year; transparency makes the relationship and process better for all.
Wells Fargo's steady contributions to early grade literacy in Philadelphia are making a positive difference; I appreciate this ongoing commitment to children across the City of Philadelphia and the region.

I would recommend speaking with one of the foundation's leaders or staff at an event they sponsor, such as an early grade literacy event. If you don't have any existing relationship established, it would probably be hard to "get in the door" at all. However, once the foundation is engaged, they are great to work with.

The foundation's applications and requirements seem rigid, but their leaders helped us navigate the requirements, so they were less onerous.

The foundation is very focused on a few key areas, and they seem to go "all in" on these, and make a difference in the City of Philadelphia.
Wells Fargo collaborating with City Year to complete school projects was a WONDERFUL choice, and really helped nail down all of the planning and execution details, and also helped ensure that the school projects were completed with high-quality results.
If you can think of any potential issues or "wrinkles" in the plan, it's best to address them as soon as possible, so that the rest of the process and timelines can proceed smoothly. The Foundation is so large that making last-minute changes can throw a wrench in the works.
I experienced the Wells Fargo Foundation as great about keeping project timelines and their commitments. I appreciated that they respected all of the stakeholder's time.

Expect disorganization and to be asked multiple times for the same piece of information. They give the vibe that genuine grantee relationships are not a priority.
