The staff at Bernsen are the prickliest I have ever dealt with. Tony Robbins, Mother Teresa and Ghandi would feel discouraged after an initial phone conversation with them. The prickly attitude makes a lot of nonprofits think they are not interested, when that isn't necessarily the case.
When talking to the staff, don't make the mistake of calling the "Abstract" the "LOI" or they will inform you that it is not an LOI; it is an abstract, you idiot.
When your LOI - sorry, I mean ABSTRACT - is approved, you will get a lukewarm email response saying they can't find any reason why you SHOULDN'T apply for a full grant. It's not that they don't like you - everyone gets the same response.
Other than this off-putting prickliness and patronizing communication style, they are an excellent foundation that supports a lot of worthy organizations in our community.

They are accessible and good at returning calls and emails. But most development people I know dread having to contact them because they are so cold.
They support a lot of causes. They also have monthly deadlines, which is great because I can schedule their application for when I don't have 100 other deadlines.
Nonprofit professionals work hard for low pay, trying to raise money to make the world a better place. Being pleasant to them shouldn't be too much to ask.
In terms of requirements, they hit a "sweet spot" in the amount of information they require vs the amount they give. This is appreciated tremendously.
