It is hard to get a meeting or even a reply to inquiries unless you have an "in", which is gross and reeks of gatekeeping.

This funder is supposedly going through a transition but none of my peers have any idea what that means for the arts. Their program director is non-responsive and they have not been transparent about how or even what their model and priorities will be.
Bad
Find a funder who is more responsive because this organization does not respond to emails pr phone calls.

They are in a leadership transition and it is very difficult to know what they care about. They say they are committed to equity but it seems to be without direction. Try to make direct contact with a program officer.

They used to be the most accessible foundation in the state. But that has all changed. A more corporate, hands-off, lack of personal relationships from the leadership is the norm now. My program officer is still trying to maintain relationships.
Bad
Hard to know what the current philanthropic goals are. They used to be so transparent but everything is opaque now. I admire the equity framework they developed and will wait to see it put into practice.
As a BIPOC arts administrator, I admire their commitment to equity and social justice but how they are doing it remains a dominant culture practice. The new leadership seems clueless.
Their program staff used to be phenomenal partners with their grantees but now I worry that the new leadership doesn't value those relationships.
Hard to know anymore what this once highly respected foundation is doing well at in this moment. They used to be so thoughtful with their grantee partners and always managed the power dynamic well but not anymore. They are a disappointing shadow of what they once were.

Just like cultivating an individual donor, it helps to create a relationship with this foundation. Their staff are very much in tune with nonprofits, nonprofit management, and their board, and will work with you to develop a strong proposal - if your work is in line with their funding priorities.

The Dodge foundation works hard to build capacity of the organizations and the community in which it funds.
