Grant Applicant - applied in 2023
Everyone applies to their grant applications. Not much advice but don't count on their funding. Hard to get and hard to sustain.
Inadvertently exerts negative influence in the field, Doesn't "get" nonprofits and issues, Culturally incompetent, Bureaucratic, Risk averse

It does feel like the team is trying to be out in the community and various settings. However, it feels like the Board makes most of the decisions and they seem inaccessible. And the Board members never change! That feels like a very big problem. It might explain the "out of touch" vibe you get from the foundation.
Bad
The Foundation often claims really lofty goals. It's very confusing what exactly their strategy is. Their Innovation funding feels like capitalism VC world (so opposite of what groups on the ground are like). It gives me chills & goose bumps every time I see the emails come through about it. I feel bad for the groups participating in the Hunger Games process. In the past, the winners were tech-based things and actual impact was pretty doubtful.
Term limits for Board members (and choose folks that are more grassroots) and create a true community participatory decision making process (not performative). Get rid of the Innovation Hunger Games. In fact, avoid using the word "innovation". It's very triggering for people working in nonprofits that has to deal with funders that only likes new shiny objects. In fact release the endowment to communities! No need to keep hoarding the money to uphold power in perpetuity.
Staff members are generally nice but they seem quite powerless.
When Nancy Sasaki was the ED, she was out in the community often and also sending newsletters about who she was meeting with. Which created an air of accessibility and transparency.

They have a very cumbersome application process and they request a very specific video be uploaded. While the video itself is not hard to produce (they accept cell phone footage), other agencies with more media-savvy individuals in leadership will always win out. They also have "innovation funding" that requires new programs to be developed usually with using technology. Past winners of this seem to not do anything really groundbreaking.

Good
You can schedule a call with their program staff and they will discuss with you your application. They are very helpful and easy to connect with.
Bad
They want to increase access to health care but they don't advocate for medicare 4 all.
Take the money you are granting out and put it towards advocacy for healthcare for all.
