Reviewer 1115 - Grant Applicant - applied in 2020
An incredibly wasteful experience that highlighted an outrageous amount of ego on the part of the Cushman family. We were invited multiple times to apply for their support, and never got adequate feedback as to why we were declined. They started a new program through the Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego, and held an hour-long orientation for applicants, insisting that applicants attend in order to be eligible to apply (taking roughly 2+ hours out of my day). The orientation was deeply condescending ("our reviewers are college educated so spelling matters!" There was an emphasis on how much $$ the CEO of the applicant charity makes and how awful it is if they make decent $. It just felt insulting the entire time. We decided after that round that we wouldn't apply to them anymore. They just seem to like to play with charities and exert their power over them.

Bad
We were never able to get a clear understanding of why they asked us to apply each year, but then declined to fund us every time. And I'm telling you: Our proposals were drafted by professional grant writers and edited by multiple staff before submitting them. If it was that our mission didn't inspire them... then don't ask us to apply again the next year. If it's that our CEO makes too much money for your tastes ... well, they're not going to make less the next year, so don't ask us to apply again the next year. Seriously, what a waste of time.
Check your ego. If you really want to "Make a Difference in San Diego," let professionals who know what they're doing manage your grant making and get yourselves out of the review process.
I'd suggest looking elsewhere.
I think their ego goals are being met, in that people keep applying to them for support.
Nope.
