Petco has a high emphasis on grantees promoting them. Your grant award is directly proportional to how many times you use their hashtags on social media and how many adoptions you do in Petco stores each year. Overall, their model of providing unrestricted funding is great for the grantee, just be aware that you will have to work for your funding by doing in-store adoptions and mentioning them on social media frequently.

You must participate in adoptions with Petco to be eligible for funding. You must also promote them to adopters.

I don't think Petco understands it's own philanthropic goals or has a sense of sophistication when it comes to its philanthropic role in the field of animal welfare. The money it grants comes from consumers. The eligibility for grantees is directly related to promotions of and for Petco, which seems blatantly self-serving and borderline unethical. To require an agency to engage in adoptions inside their store to be eligibile for money AND engage in promotions, which benefit a publicly traded company, does not seem like corporate social responsibility, philanthropy, or anything other than marketing by another name.
Bad
I'd say be careful. You are giving away your customers's money. Then you require the grantees to jump through all kinds of promotional hoops just to have access to the so-called philanthropy you want to tout as an example of your generosity. For example, we are supposed to adopt animals inside and in front of your stores, then send our new adopted families into your stores for food and supplies just to be eligible to apply for a grant. At some point, regulations will recognize this is not in compliance with foundation guidelines. This might as well be a sponsorship or goods and services recieved relationship with your grantee. It feels like blackmail. Also it feels like you are out of touch with the very industry you seek to fund. The future of animal rescue will be fostering to adopt and NOT having animals in cages inside your stores. Adopting via fostering and fostering meet-ups will not be congruent with this forced model of yours. Also forcing the grantee to give you shout outs on social media just looks bad on your part.
They are maybe worth it if your model is to place animals up for adoption every week in their stores and have "adoption parties" every weekend at their location (and then you have to hold insurance so stand by), but they are becoming increasingly exclusive and difficult to work with for smaller and smaller amounts of money. It's not worth it and feels like extortion for free marketing on their part. And remember- it's not even their money.
Self-promotion. They directly tie funding to levels of adoption and promotion from the rescue charity to the local store. This is so they can say they are rescuing animals. If you are a foster-based organization or have your own brick and mortar shelter, and that is the best way to rescue and save animals, Petco will not fund you.

It's really important to understand their funding cycle: shelters and spay-neuter providers have different application periods, even if you're asking for spay-neuter funding. Also, get your numbers right with Shelter Animals Count before you apply.

They are open to your input as to what would make the most difference in your community. They don't pretend to know what would be most impactful for you.
Clone yourselves. Petco Foundation is amazing!
Commitment to long-term goals and trusting their grantees to use the funds in the most effective way. (Oops, that's 2 things.) They want to see the overall impact of your project, not a nitpicky list of the animals affected, etc.

It is critical to complete the current year Partner animal data prior to applying for funding. Depending on your organization, this can take longer than the actual application. The new grants portal is easy to navigate and we found that Petco is always responsive to emails. They are a stellar organization!

The Petco Foundation has several strong grant areas. Be very clear in your application about what you want to fund and include as many measurable metrics as you can. They like to see growth during the reporting period.
