Grant Applicant - applied in 2026
This funder is hard to predict in the arts. They decide who to invite. They tell you the grant amount to seek. Staff seem relatable, but the complex guidelines of what they do and don't fund is... cumbersome. Nervous to say anything out of risk that they will decide not to fund in the future.

It's disappointing to see so many funders resort to "invite only" applications right now.
Bad
When the funder issued new guidelines about 2-3 years ago, they cut off long-standing grantees with zero warning. The 6 pages of guidelines for existing grantees required all re-applying grantees to identify their "chicago roots." Not only was the application overly cumbersome, but it was an uncomfortable revelation that the Foundation doesn't know its own grantees or the Chicago arts community. The Foundation couldn't explain why some of its "example organizations" fit the criteria they'd announced.
Get out of the office. Talk to cultural workers. Take feedback. Don't rest on your past history or name.
It's great if you get a grant. We're nervous that will get pulled unexpectedly.
Gives large 2 year grants.
