I'm not sure they're actually open to new grantees, though they do have an LOI process. It seems like they stick with their tried and true grantees every year.

Can get them on the phone.
Good
Their grantees do fit their guidelines and are good orgs. There are others just as good not funded.
It might help to just say online how many new grantees you award on average every year, like one, two, most years no new grantees, etc. Not sure if you really don't take many new, or if you just don't like any of the in-guideline orgs I have written you LOIs for.

We submitted a Letter of Inquiry to the Frey Foundation to help purchase equipment for our Special Needs Dental Care Project. They responded appropriately and in a timely matter.

Frey Foundation of Minnesota has made a lot of grants towards affordable housing.
The trustees spend the time to really look over proposals and come to the site visits with thoughtful questions (especially regarding financials – so be ready to explain your numbers).

They responded quick to calls and emails from the LOI, to the application, the site visit, to the grant award. Kelly Raatz was really good to work with.
Good
They know their areas of interest well (housing, human services, education) and are good at spreading their giving around within these spheres.
Along with giving general operating funds, they are interested in inspiring others to give too, so they like to offer grants that can be used as a match for smaller gifts. But be ready to prove how you leveraged their gift.
There’s a lot of change going on at our organization and we have launched a couple new programs. They were encouraged to see us being creative and trying new approaches.
Looks at the data. They crunch the numbers in terms of need and impact. They also look hard at all financial statements.

Asks good questions at site visit. Like to learn about the issues we are facing as a nonprofit and they needs we see in the community.
