Know before you go: there are hoops inside hoops inside hoops to jump through for this money. We got $10K from them after three rounds of proposal revisions, and are now in the renewal process for $10K (they declined to increase the ask we could make) and on the third revision to our proposal materials. Not because we didn't completely answer their questions, but because the trustee who is reviewing our proposal before taking it to the board has ADDITIONAL information requests.

Ask all of your questions up front, rather than coming back with round after round of information requests. Streamline your process, stop requiring information to be so specific to YOUR organization. It is possible to be values-driven without requiring huge amounts of work on potential grantees' part. Look for example at how the Seabury Foundation is working, and Donnelley, others using a trust-based philanthropy approach. Your process is onerous, particularly for the grant level you provide.
They seem to be pretty consistent in year to year funding. Rather than simply rejecting a proposal, they do provide opportunities to offer additional information.

This funder is very particular. Follow their rules. If your LOI is not double-spaced, for example, they will automatically decline it. They insist on numerical benchmarks for all goals and objectives. Overall, it seems that their trustees are very old-school in their thinking. On the plus side, if you are invited to submit a full proposal, the staff person works closely with you so that you have a strong proposal. She'll come back to you and ask for rewrites, rather than just letting the trustees decline it.

Very accessible if they accept your LOI. Not at all before that.
More general operating grants, not so project-based.
Like to issue their grants as challenge grants.
