This foundation gives 96% of its funds to nonprofits founded by White people. They claim that racial justice is their number one priority but the dollars indicate otherwise. Hundreds of thousands of dollars go to White savior organizations and they try to appease Black and Brown people with small $5000 or $10,000 donations. Our organizations cannot build capacity with such meager funding. When the President of the organization was asked what they would do to remedy this issue, they declined to do anything.

Bad
Giving at this organization is strictly based on the good old boys network. If you do not have an advocate within the organization and even if you do, you will likely not get much if anything from them.

Racial justice is their number one goal but they do not trust people of color with the resources needed to change the current system. Sometimes they like to support organizations that have a Black or Brown executive director but were founded and are controlled by White people. People of color deserve to have our organizations supported.
Who is making the decisions on which projects gets funded? Where is the scoring ruberic? Why is the process so secretive? You should be an open book when it comes to what you do and do not fund. If people of color need to know people at the foundation to get funded, start engaging people of color so those relationships can be developed.
This is truly one of those organizations that only funds the programs that they have identified before they release their RFPs. It is usually a waste of time to go through the process of writing a grant with them unless you have made several connections with the organization insiders in advance.
When I applied for funding, I was denied, but within the last year I was given a couple of small donations from the organization out of the blue.
They give away millions of dollars to White people each year. They are great at putting people of color all over their websites and newsletters to pretend that they are advancing racial equity. The data in Grand Rapids shows that nothing has changed for people of color during the entire time they have been studying it.
