They are difficult to reach. We got an email response back about 4 days before the proposal deadline.

Average but with email contact info given, there is potential to be better so it becomes more frustrating.
Good
Based on their grantees, they are achieving its goals. But like all foundations, it makes sense to keep a consistent grantee cohort for long term impact/stability, but that makes it frustrating for new applicants.
Be responsive to emails in a timely manner.
They understand the unique needs of the immigrant/refugee committees

Having a personal connection to or relationship with the foundation's executive leadership and/or board members will be directly correlated to your success in funding.

Having chosen to focus on the environment, arts, and immigration, the Marbrook Foundation is funding some truly fantastic organizations in the Twin Cities who are leading effective work in those areas.

The new guidelines are very clear. We did not request a conversation before submitting a proposal. Be concise and coherent in your narrative, and address the guidelines.

Staff and board personnel were very interested in conducting a site visit, and the board chair made it happen on a Sunday. The site visitor was informed, inquisitive, and invested in the job.

Keep doing what you're doing.
Realize that this is a "smaller" funder that has thoughtfully organized its priorities and is looking to do good by doing right. That may be a cliche but it's true.

The lack of feedback on why proposals advance or do not is an obstacle to understanding what will make a success proposal versus something they will pass on.

Please set up a formal process for feedback to applicants who you ultimately choose not to fund.
Very easy to understand LOI process that is relatively easy; this allows you to see if the funder is interested in your proposed idea without committing a bunch of time to developing a full proposal.

This funder is very difficult to reach, via phone or email. It will take several tries and much time will elapse.

Communicate
The present Executive Director has no previous professional experience in the nonprofit arena and works in this role on a part time basis.
The potential grantee submitted a full proposal for consideration. This was rejected and the grantee was then asked to submit a LOI under the aegis of another program area, later in the calendar year. After tailoring an LOI to align with the "new" program area focus, the potential grantee was not invited to submit a full proposal. This was a tremendous waste of time for the organization and those involved in the grant's preparation.

As a former grantee, we have had terrible luck with the Marbrook foundation this year. After sending multiple emails and making multiple phone calls, we have not been able to get in touch with anyone about their new grant guidelines. No one has called or emailed us back. It's been an incredibly frustrating process, and we're not sure if we should go ahead and submit a proposal.
