Reviewer 5745 - Grant Applicant - applied in 2018
Must be invited to apply but any CLA employee can nominate. We applied unsuccessfully in 2017. They provided oral and detailed written feedback including actual reviewer comments to help us improve the application. We were actually funded for $5000 more than we applied for.

Good
As a small foundation it’s staffed sparsely however they are very thoughtful and give feedback to ANYONE who asks. Takes a little time to get through/get the feedback scheduled but they are very responsive and VERY HELPFUL.
Good
They fund Education, Employment and Entrepreneurship...but it’s really about workforce development /employment. It’s actually pretty clearly described.
Increased training for grant reviewers (which are CLA employees)
They clearly state what is a fit in their One question LOI. If you’re not a fit don’t apply.
Feedback.

Grant Applicant - applied in 2018
Their guidelines are broad but what they're actually looking for is very narrow.
Also, they have employees read the applications, and those employees are not always well-versed in evaluating grants (e.g. if you have a good fundraising strategy and a large budget, they may say that you don't need their money).
Doesn't "get" nonprofits and issues, Difficult to work with

It can be hard to get in touch or get feedback. It took us many tries.

It doesn't feel like the employees reviewing the grants understand what makes a non-profit effective or worthy of funding.
Be clearer about what you're looking for. Educate your employees on what a healthy financial position for a non-profit is. Don't continue to encourage non-profits to sink hours into applications over and over with such a small chance of being funded/after being rejected more than once.
