This large foundation is very difficult to work with and difficult to receive funding. There seems to be some "pet" agencies they support. Their staff are very difficult to contact, do not follow up, and rude and condescending. It feels as if nonprofits have to grovel to the staff at KHF, which is very demeaning. Also, the board has no representation from the nonprofit community, even retired CEO's, or consumers of service. This only reinforces the perception that many nonprofits have of KHF and their superiority to those doing the actual hard work.
Doesn't "get" nonprofits and issues, Difficult to work with, Bureaucratic

Bad
People don't respond and will say they will do something (like follow up with an email or send somesthing via email) and don't.
Bad
Have they moved the needle in terms of health?
Remember that the nonprofits who are asking you for help deserve respect. They are performing difficult work and should be treated as equals not lesser thans.
Good Luck!!
Promote themselves and attach to the latest "trend". The office is very nice.

They will say, "you need better outcomes" every single time they deny you but will never ever tell you how to get there. They barely give any rejection feedback at all. Throwing an app here is like working with a black hole. They clearly just want to play favorites.

No way to get rejection feedback. People running special projects pick their favorites and won't let anyone else in the state participate with their chosen few.

The biggest challenge to health outcomes is something my agency addresses and we have trying to tell them this for years and they refuse to listen.
Use a lot of buzzwords. Take a look at their most recent symposium agenda. It's all out of state gurus. Use whatever buzzwords those gurus are using. Don't worry about helping people from Kansas, this foundation is more interested in buzzworks and out of state gurus.
Don't bother if you are too grassroots. You should pretend to be grassroots and not actually deal with actual citizens.
They protect social service agencies from Super rich right wingers who want to destroy government services.
