You simply have to have a relationship with the trustees, but if you are perceived as going around the professionals they will be angry and take it out on you.

She is responsive one minute and then totally disappears. You can not hear from her for weeks or months in response to emails or phone calls.

I think that they think of themselves as very hardcore strategic givers who are extremely interested in effectiveness and impact with measurables etc. But they have enormous giving capacity and they don't use even a tiny fraction of it. At first they said that they were still learning, but now it is hard to understand what is holding them back.
Be better at responding to grantees and people with whom you start processes. You will ask many many questions and ask for those questions to be answered urgently, but then nothing will be done with this work for weeks or months it seems. We are happy to spend time, but our time is very valuable too and it is beyond frustratining when donors are flakey and unresponsive in addition to being super demanding.
They are exceptionally demanding and will ask a million questions after submitting proposals, more and more and more. And it is all urgent, and then they can disappear on you and it was all a waste of your time. Beware.
This funder is willing to give capacity building grants and has also provided funding for conducting external evaluations.
