Schedule a call or meeting with the grant manager to discuss your project and assess the level of interest from the Foundation. An in-person meeting with foundation family members would be even better, but that may only be an option after being funded once.

Good
Volgenau Foundation is good about articulating its interests and what it wants to support (and not), as well as providing feedback to applicants about what they liked and didn't.
Good
At least in the environment space, where I have experience, TVF seems to be funding projects and organizations that are doing great work and need help. TVF seems particularly interested in helping fund work in places where there are few other active funders. Hurray!
When hiring a new grant manager, hire one as thorough, kind, and open-minded as the last one (who's leaving in 2019, I think).
TVF has been the easiest funder to work with in my 10 years of experience. There are some shifts taking place in the types of work the Foundation will fund, so do take time to ensure that your project still meets the current objectives of the Foundation.
Good communication and willingness to allow flexibility in the allocation of grant funds and the specifics of funded work.
