Emotionally abusive leadership has set back the organization significantly. South Arts is in desperate need of a culture reset. Staff attempting to lead meaningful cultural change were punished through withholding of opportunities, sabotage of programming, and emotional baiting before group activities. HR was retaliatory when legitimate concerns were raised, including espousing blatantly sexist attitudes and defending transphobic language from other employees. The passive board was negligent when given explicit accounts of systemic mistreatment. Ultimately, ten staff members left within a year's time, seven within in a ten week period in late 2024. This included nearly every member of the internal Equity Committee. Anyone who makes it through the obscene number of interviews is blindsided by the chaotic and hierarchical culture that is antithetical to the values presented externally. People don't stick around like they used to. I wouldn't consider applying for several years.

There's not a single member of management that isn't culpable for exacerbating the cultural divide between management and staff. Step up to lead or get out of the way.

Some staff are phenomenal. As a whole South Arts is a mixed bag. They don't do site visits and leadership feels disconnected from the larger community. Find your cheerleader and work with them. Some of the board is great - some. South Arts really needs to work on connecting to the larger community.

Conduct anonymous surveys of grantees and colleagues. Implement practices advocated by Vu Le with Nonprofit AF.
Actions over words - pay attention to what South Arts does and does not do.
No issues with the grant process other than they have a lot of different grants that seem to change each year and it can be hard to keep up.
Some of the staff are GREAT at engaging with grant applicants.

South Arts seems to be disconnected from its geographic area of focus. Some states get more emphasis than others.
Site visits to the region. Co-locate staff across the region. Too isolated staying in Atlanta.
Unrestricted funding awards for artists.
