I have worked with this foundation for over 12 years now representing a variety of organizations as a grant consultant. Usually, but not always, I have found them to be rather difficult to work with - hard to get questions answered, phone calls not returned, or receiving short dry responses. When contacting them be SURE you have thoroughly familiarized yourself with their detailed website first, as they do NOT like to repeat anything already available there. They also appear, through the years, to have definite "favorites" among their funded, and it is hard for smaller newbies to break in with a funded proposal.

Get to know people there somehow. Although I think they would hate to think they are seen this way, many of us in the Asheville nonprofit arena see them as a funder for their friends. And I am saying this as someone who helped an organization receive a relatively small grant from them.
Appears to fund the same organizations repeatedly - some deservedly; others, not so sure!
