Their program officers sometimes seem in the dark about the organization's overall strategy. The more specifics you go in the door with, the better.

I find that communication with this Foundation has decreased in the past two years. Program officers are slow to respond, and when they do, they often have incomplete information regarding (e.g.) budget revisions, etc.
Average
They appear to be shifting their strategy, so unclear what their current goals are.
Please encourage your Program Officers to consider the timeliness and completeness of their message when communicating to grantees.
n/a
They have a great administrative support team who will often assist when a grantee is experiencing delays in contacting the program officer.

They have changed their priorities a great deal over the years. They seemed interested in systemic change at one point -- so ensure that you can demonstrate the catalytic impact of your grant on the broader field. Also -- try to get a meeting with their staff, if you can.

Good
I had an amazing grant officer who was very transparent with us about the foundation's changing priorities and how we would no longer be supported annually.

Strong staff help this foundation to make transformative investments.
Consider multi-year, unrestricted operating grants to help an organization expand its capacity -- and partner with them to track the grant impact, such as using some funding for outside consulting to conduct a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis of the organization.
Their funding priorities seem to have shifted recently so be sure to discuss your application with a staff member, if you can.
Takes risks that can make a big impact.
