Reviewer 3863 - Grant Applicant - applied in 2023
It’s required to have an email or telephone conversation with foundation staff prior to submitting a LOI or proposal. Staff replies back promptly but is rude during nearly every interaction - verbally insulting, etc. In addition, although the foundation lists their grant process and due dates on their website, they often make changes to the process and timeline on a whim, and do not publish or communicate this, even to recipients of long-time continued funding. This makes it very difficult for a nonprofit to plan budgets and schedules and puts programs in need of ongoing operating support in jeopardy.

Prior to 2022 the grant submission process was done by paper application requiring many attachments. They are supposed to be transitioning to an online process eventually. Website information is not updated nearly often enough.

I’m not ever sure what their current goals are. During conversations with foundation staff, they encourage the development of particular programs but then refuse to fund them, so there seems to be some disconnect.
I encourage fewer changes to grantmaking process and timeline be made on a whim. Often it’s difficult for nonprofits to make a major pivot to budget and/or programming in the middle of a fiscal year.
Received funding prior to 2023; opportunity to apply for funding in 2023 was deferred to 2024
When funding animal sanctuaries and rescues, the funder does check to see if the organization is accredited, which is a helpful benchmark to endorse that their grantees are operating with best practices.
