The grant manager is really smart and asks substantive follow up questions. I often find online portals difficult to navigate and theirs was no different. The renewal process mixed with the new application felt confusing and repetitive, but also totally fine. Top-notch organization that seems educated and involved in the issues they fund.

I am not familiar with the process of approaching FNV directly, but rather they participate in a funders' collective that reviews subject-matter related proposals along with other foundations and they make strategic decisions as a group. However, I suspect that they would be very responsive and candid with anyone who wanted to reach out to them about their process, capacity, and interests. I would recommend email contact and being clear and detailed in your message.

They are great about communicating clearly and quickly - and are willing to be flexible about the timing of submitting required reports (when there are good reasons and after providing support for why flexibility is needed).

Fund for Nonviolence is committed to supporting good work and making the grant writing process streamlined. We have a demonstrated history of hard won, yet successful work and have developed a really positive working relationship with them. I think a personal conversations of work being done seems to be highly valued by their staff.

This funder values grassroots work, as well as transparency and honesty. They'd rather know the truth about your challenges than see a shiny dog and pony show. They also give budgets a close read, so make sure you're able to answer detailed questions about what you need, what you have, and how resources are being spent.

While they don't have a lot of funds to give, they are champions for the issues and grantees they support, and leverage their relationships to encourage other funders to give what they can't. They are also very aware of how nonprofits work, so they work with grantees to understand the needs and fill in gaps that other funders are less likely to fund, thereby maximizing the value of their limited dollars without using onerous restrictions to do so.
Consider earlier deadlines so that follow up questions on proposals don't come down to the wire and require fast turnaround or weekend work. (That said, this is common with every foundation and Fund for Nonviolence is understanding and tries to work with your schedule.) Also, this funder is a model for other funders. They already do a lot of thought leadership among funders, but the more they can help other foundations to understand how nonprofits work, the better. There is so much funder education needed about how many resources are wasted making organizations jump through hoops to navigate complex restrictions and proposal demands, and Fund for Nonviolence is so understanding of these things that they are an important voice to continue pushing the envelope with their peers.
This is the funder you wish every other funder emulated.
They do so many things well! They are very aware of funder/grantee power dynamics and work hard to mitigate those and be transparent about them. They build real relationships with the groups they support. As a grantee, I always feel that they genuinely care about the well-being of me and my organization, trust the work that I'm doing, and treat me like a partner and leader rather than a supplicant.
