The foundation may have changed their priorities but it still feels very much like if you are a popular organization (one of the cool kids if you will), then you will be funded. But if you're not, I was appalled that we were told by a program officer that our work wasn't as important as we thought it was.
Further, the amount of hoops you have to jump through to get what turns out to be a very small grant seems unrespectful and as if they don't understand the amount of time and energy it takes to go through the application process.

Not going to fund unrestricted, not going to take risks, not going to push the field- they are still largely traditional. I wish they knew their position of influence in the community.

This is a good foundation but they are very atuned to details and fund very specific activities not general operating

Be ready because they can be challenging to interact with. Sometimes deadlines are unclear, the process can feel bureaucratic. They are traditional and not progressive, and their scope can feel somewhat limited. Staff is also overwhelmingly white and middle or upperclass.

Radical change isn't going to happen without radical plans for funding more progressive organizations. Goals are amazing, but small organizations and those staff aren't personally familiar with can feel like outsiders.
Fund well within their scope.

Some program officers are very easy to get in touch with, while others you often feel like you are not part of the popular group because they do not get back to you. It is also not clear how in pre-grant conversations you are told you apply for more and then get funded for 50% or less of what you requested. It is a lot of work for not that much funding.

It really depends on who you are trying to get in touch with at the foundation, some program officers are unresponsive and not friendly while other's really are thought partners in the work.

Be more innovative, be more willing to take a risk and set a sample, other funders look at what you are funding and try to follow suit. Be consistent across program areas and be accessible. As a funder that represents all 7 counties of the metro region, be representative.
This funder historically has had opportunities for convenings and gatherings of grantees and that was great. Their Roots and Branches Young Adult Program is great as is their Teen Philanthropy program.
