Looks like at long last they have ended the onerous grants process, and now will operate more as a professional foundation.

Things are changing and I think a new ED will help this a lot. But still remains to be seen.

Too new to comment here.
Respect their new grant guidelines. Don't apply if you're not directly aligned with those.

Plan on spending quite a bit of time (more than 20 hours) completing this application. Consider whether the average amount granted ($2,500) worth it.

It is relatively easy to contact someone, but they were not always able to answer questions adequately.

Widen your scope and try looking beyond public schools as the only organization that serves the needs of children.

This is among the worst grant applications I've encountered in 10+ years as a grant writer. It's petty, poorly written, and punitive. The foundation clearly cares little for nonprofits' limited resources and is uninterested in truly helping move the needle. Its application is looking to weed out applicants more than to help foster positive change. There are better ways to weed out applicants than to require this onerous of a proposal.

if you're looking to weed out applicants - do it through a simpler process - an LOI, invited applicants only, etc.

As with any foundation, make sure your goals align with the Foundation's focus areas. Grants are modest, but the staff is approachable, friendly, and deeply committed to making the community better. Their grant process is a bit antiquated, requiring multiple paper copies with different info on different colored pages.

While I understand the paper grant submission process, having been on that side of the grantmaking process also, the requirement for multiple copies and different information on different colored paper is rather cumbersome. A common grant application or online application process might be more efficient for all.
This foundation has a personal approach with grantees and is truly committed to their mission and the work their grantees engage in. Good response time on funding requests also.
