You must talk to a program officer and be prepared to align exactly with their philosophy of "pulling someone up by the bootstraps" and long-term tracking of clients after an "intervention". The Fund is not open to learning from nonprofits, so you will not be having a discussion of the issue but proving that your program does what they want.

Bad
Scheduled a meeting with a program officer, and he cut it short because he had another meeting, with no apology.
Bad
They want to address homelessness and not rely on public assistance, but the problem in Denver is too great not not use any public assistance.
Be open to learning from grantees and grantseekers who are on the front lines of the issues that the Daniels Fund wants to address.
Their application is not too onerous, and they are generous with their funds.

Talk to the Program Officer and get their support first. Otherwise, forget it. Pay no attention to what they say their priorities are; they seem to fund almost randomly, so you might as well ask, and see. This is a personality based foundation - whether or not you get funding seems to depend largely on who you know, and how much support they will extend to your organization

This funder is terribly inaccessible. Our old Program Officer knew us, believed in us, and worked with us. One day, for no apparent reason, we were given a new Program Officer. This person never came to see us, and literally told us she was too busy to actually see our programs, and talk to us. When we were not funded we were told that it "wasn't a good match" even though we had been a good match for the previous 5+ years. We didn't change, and we have no understanding of what changed for them. I feel like a proposal here is like shooting darts. We simply cannot figure out what they fund and what they don't - an ever changing landscape.

I have no idea what the philanthropic goals of this funder are
Please shorten the process (currently it takes 18 months), and be more clear and objective about what you will and won't fund.
Not funded. We were funded in previous years, but not this one
They have a lovely building that they are willing to let nonprofits meet in - good for Board retreats

The Daniels Fund reinvents it mission frequently-its a moving target with no relevancy or rationale related to real life community issues.

Grant officers are difficult to reach. They do not always have definitive answers.
Bad
This foundation wants to fund homelessness program but will not fund community based organizations on the ground working on a daily basis to combat homelessness.
Determine what communities need and fund those needs and fund operations.
There is limited communication when the foundation takes a directional turn.
Given token amount when de-funded.
The Daniels Fund has slick annual reports.

Because they are so huge, EVERYONE is trying to get an audience with them. Their program officers are very capable and knowledgeable, and their board seems to have provided pretty strong guardrails against what the *won't* fund.

Because of their high visibility, and the volume they have to deal with, they can tend to be rather stand-offish and come across as "know-it-all."

They're quite the 900 pound gorilla, it would be nice to believe they're having the impact they should.
Do your homework. Read their guidelines and analyze their grants list carefully before reaching out to them.
Very conservative.

Very generous with sharing their space.
