It would be best to know someone that can introduce you to the funder to have a meeting with them.

That the larger the grantee is, does not necessarily reflect the quality of their work. Because a grantee has been in existence longer than others, also does not reflect the quality of their work.
Is open to a meeting.

I have no advice for this organization. They are so professional and helpful. They are one of the organizations that we enjoy working with.

Definitely call the Grants Officer before applying and seek advice from her on approach and grant amount. Have your idea/strategy well thought-out before making this call.

Go beyond the "usual suspects" in recruitment of board members. Diversify and grow staff. Get board out into the community. Bring board together with grantees. One-on-ones between grantees and leadership. The grant application doesn't tell you everything about an organization's leader, its programming, its aspirations, etc.
Communicate.

I would definitely suggest finding ways to interact with the group and getting to know key members a bit before applying. Request a meeting or phone conversation, or attend an event they are sponsoring. Its just like any other process in life, familiarity an putting yourself in someone else's shoes goes a long way towards success. The long-term approach will give greater confidence in putting in the time and energy to tackle the application, and that generally builds in a different way than just sitting down and saying "You funder, me organization."

Very accessible, they have always taken my calls, or emails and assisted with dialogue whenever possible, though I don't believe I'm a "high-maintenance" individual.

Extremely successful. There is not an arts organization in town that I believe would think otherwise. They are very supportive and thorough, and broad enough with their aims to take on new or risky projects.
Show off projects that challenge the status quo a little more or that don't already have great visibility in the community or popular consensus of what "art" is or should be. Diversity shouldn't relate just to the makeup of the community or who your project is for, but to functions within art that are pushing the boundaries and shaping the future in ways that can advance the profile of a city.
My expense with the funder has been extremely positive, and has unfolded over time. The scale and level of the funder seems enormous, yet the team in my impression seems relatively small but focused. I'm impressed with their openness, but just like everyone involved or invested in the arts, they should be treated as having a great deal on their plate to manage and its likely they can't/won't fund everything that comes their way.
Communication and trust. They make me feel like they are a conduit in support of the arts and not just a power group.
