Schism between young, woke staff and board. Getting over the first hump puts your application in peril with the second.

Staff have determined and convinced the wallet that they need "better relationships" with current funders...so no 2020 applications will be considered. Success to the successful.
You're sitting on Scrooge McDuck piles of money. Why entrust it to staff to "develop relationships" who will leave you in a couple of years in order to further their careers and/or desires? You're prioritizing the aspirations/feelings of seven when you could be supporting the multitudes. Hire more staff it you need to, but don't let the feelings of your payroll squander the opportunities for those you hope to support.
Staff aren't clear what the board will fund...and can offer no insight as to why or why not.
When you get the opportunity to talk to actual board members, the conversations are awesome, generative and substantial.

They got our mission and values, and it was a good match for theirs (which are posted in detail on their website). If it's not a match for your organization, don't force it as they really delve into this.

I want to love Satterberg Foundation. However, I've tried multiple times over the last 2 years, on behalf of client organizations who have been funded and those seeking funding, to create a relationship with a particular program officer - AND SHE JUST WILL NOT EVER EMAIL OR CALL ME BACK. Never.

The staff at Satterberg are very responsive and helpful, and they really want organizations to succeed. They ask great questions, and are open to hearing from you as the expert in your field. Show them the impact of what you do, and they'll be excited to see it!

Staff are readily accessible by email and phone, and genuinely want to work with their grantees/prospective grantees.

This funder provides capacity building grants, and they work together with grantees to set appropriate goals/milestones together. They have a progressive view in that they know organizations run up against the unexpected (both opportunities and challenges), and are very open to reasonable adjustments.
For organizations that are very used to providing very formal scopes of work, full metrics and logic models, sometimes they need reassurance that it truly IS a collaborative relationship post-award. A lot of organizations are used to the 1-yr cycle and want to jump on every award with a plan and reporting schedule right away, in preparation for the next year. They might need a little reminding along the way that the 3-year relationship with Satterberg is just a start!
Working as a grantee with the Satterberg Foundation was a true joy, and a wonderful experience all around. Their openness to the capacity building process is refreshing, and their tolerance of all the unknowns that nonprofits face over a three-year grant term makes partnership with Satterberg a true honor for any nonprofit.
They work very hard to build a relationship of equals with their grantees. Their materials say that they strive for a strong partnership and collaboration, and it shows in all of my interactions with them.

They say they are looking for alignment with their mission, but they clearly have other priorities that they consider over mission-alignment that they do not discuss publicly.

This foundation wants to fund sustainability and social justice, but they won't fund the research needed to even know what kinds of policies are effective.
Since mission alignment is obviously not the number one priority, stop saying that it is.
Program officers are responsive.

I would highly recommend applying to this foundation for capacity building. I really appreciate their approach and clear value of being of service to nonprofits. Even though we were not selected to submit a full proposal, I feel very good about our decision to send in an LOI.

They state that they see the nonprofits as the experts and that is back up by their very accessible application process. I think all of that means they will have great success in accomplishing their goals.

Be as obvious with your the racial diversity of your staff, board, and program participants as possible. Really obvious. Bring the darkest shaded board member. Our board member and her child identify as native american and we were told later by Satterberg board members they were too white.

Value all people. Pursuing equity does not mean a lighter shade of skin color has less value than a darker shade.

They are a group of individuals, mostly in their 50's and 60's, who are dedicated mostly to social justice and environmental issues. They are progressive and like progressive proposals, so don't be conservative with them.
