It's essential to identify and cultivate a trustee contact. They tend to fund many of the same organizations on a repeat basis, so if you aren't a current grantee, you need an advocate in the board room to describe the impact of your programming for other trustees unfamiliar with your organization.

I wouldn't recommend sending an application over the transom without establishing individual contact with a trustee first. Once you have a secured a contact, you'll get a much faster and more helpful response.

Right now the funder's goals are to support organizations and programs that their founder supported, so they are accomplishing that. They sometimes broaden their horizons and consider funding for newer organizations/programs that they believe would have aligned with the founder's values, which is helpful for expanding their impact in the community.
